3 ways to pray for America

by: abby sexton

Praying for our nation may seem unimportant. In the midst of our most troubled seasons we often make prayer a last resort. If we pray, we tend to pray for ourselves and our circumstances. But what if we brought everything before the Lord? What if we had such a close relationship with Christ that we prayed for not only our personal desires, but for the good of others and our nation as a whole?

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” We are called to pray for our nation and for the well-being of every citizen and every government leader. If we bring our nation to God, repent and turn from our sin, God will redeem us and heal our land. We should want this for ourselves, our families, and our neighbors.

#1: pray for revival and reformation

The best way we can be praying for America is praying for revival and reformation to happen in our nation. We need people across the country to turn to Christ, go to church, read the Word of God, and raise up families who love and serve God. I once heard someone say true revival must be followed by reformation. We see revival happening in our generation, and praise God for that! But we must see true reformation - true repentance - follow this revival. We must turn from our sin and follow Christ - both individually and corporately.

#2: pray for our leaders and all in authority

1 Timothy 2:1-2 says, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” We are called to pray for our leaders that they would turn to God and would rule by godly principles so that we may all live in peace. Our authority figures affect our daily lives with the decisions they make, so we want to pray they would listen to God as they make decisions on our behalf.

#3: pray for the coming generation

We should pray for our own generation that godly leaders would rise up and that we would look to Christ in all things. Our generation is driven, bold, and passionate. We are a generation on mission - we have a desire to make an impact in our nation, and I believe God has placed us in this nation at the exact right time. We must pray that we would have the boldness to share the gospel, make disciples, and take action to do what God has called us to do.

Let’s pray for America together!
