3 ways to become a godly leader

by abby Ralph

1. Lead Through Prayer and Intimacy with God

A godly leader is strengthened by spending time with God in prayer and reading scripture. It may sound like your typical Sunday School answer – but spending time with God will make it clear what you are called to do. In reading God’s Word, you will learn more about God’s character and what He asks us to do as Christians. Many answers we seek about our life can already be found in the Bible. Prayer is also vitally important as it aligns our hearts to God’s and He speaks to us in the quiet moments of prayer. In order to make an impact publicly, you must have a relationship with God privately.

Matthew 6:6 “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

2.  Lead by Example

Jesus was the perfect example of godly leadership. One way he lead was by serving others. He washed the disciples’ feet, cared for the forgotten, and described Himself as “gentle and lowly.” People follow authenticity, and we should follow His example of humility by caring for others.

Matthew 23:11-12 “The greatest among you will be your servant. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.”

3.  Lead with Courage and Conviction

Jesus was not just gentle and lowly – He was bold and brave. He confronted the Jewish leaders about their sin and insistence on disbelief. He turned over tables in the temple when He saw the House of God being disrespected. He protected His flock. We should follow His example and be bold in our beliefs. Don’t be afraid to speak the truth and fight for justice. Jesus said the world will hate us because of Him. We are not here to please everyone, but to make disciples and bring glory to God.

Matthew 23: 13-14 “You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You won't go in yourselves, and you keep others from going in.”
